Dead Man Tells No Tales but Beliefs Prevail: Death Mythology [Bananas No Return]

Bananas No Return

In the Southern part of the peninsula, the Mentras or Mantras, the shy tribe in the Malay Peninsula, believed that men used to grow thin in the waning moon and waxed fat again. As a result, they believed, people were unaware of increasing or decreasing population. Then the son of the first men addressed the problem to his father who then submitted to the Lord of the Underworld who preferred death. Since then, men must die like bananas and leave their offspring behind.

The Nias, natives of Sumatra, Indonesia, believed that the messenger who was sent by god to do the final touch to the world ate bananas instead of crabs. As a result, men had to die like bananas instead of casting shells like crabs.

You may find the story about bananas and death unrelated, just as I do. Yes, indeed the stories do not seem to provide sufficient reason why human must die like bananas since bananas are plant and not animals and it has nothing resembles human. However, at least when bananas are dead, either by being crush, eaten, or rotted, they could not return to their previous life. I guess that is the only similarity bananas have to human’s death phenomena.
