If you have psoriasis, you know the drill: itchy, scaly patches of skin that just won't go away. You've probably tried a million different creams and ointments, but nothing seems to work. Otezla (apremilast) is a new oral medication that is effective for treating psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It works by inhibiting an enzyme that is involved in inflammation.
Otezla is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause Otezla side effects. The most common Otezla side effects are diarrhea, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, and headache. Less common Otezla side effects include depression, weight loss, and itching.
Some people experience gastrointestinal Otezla side effects when they first start taking Otezla. These Otezla side effects usually go away after a few weeks. If they don't, your doctor may recommend that you take a lower dose or take the medication with food.
Depression is a potential Otezla side effects. If you have a history of depression, be sure to tell your physician.
