Adults who work may currently feel discomfort from overworking, especially in the back. One of the most prevalent symptoms is back pain, with prevalence rates ranging from 12 to 40% globally. Neck pain (cervical), middle back pain (thoracic), low back pain (lumbar), and coccydynia (tailbone or sacral pain) are the four main forms of back pain. The most common disorders associated with back pain include muscle or ligament strain, bulging or ruptured discs, arthritis, and osteoporosis. Treatment for Back Pain

How to Relieve Back Pain

Back pain treatment can range from self-treatment to professional help. The recommended back pain reliefs are suggested below:

Self-treatment

  1.  Rest and move when necessary. Normally, the injured muscles will get painful when moving, hence the rest. However, it is recommended to move and stay active as much as you can to prevent muscle weakness in the long term.
  2.  Taking pain relief medication, usually NSAIDs. (Such as ibuprofen)
  3. Applying hot compression for muscle spasms, and cold compression in case of traumatic injury or bruises.
  4.  Avoid prolonged posture or repeated movement: excessive sitting for a long period of time or bad posture when working with a computer.
  5. Gently stretch your body and limbs. It is recommended to do the stretching routinely to prevent and help relieve back pain.

Back Pain Medical Treatment

If self-treatment doesn’t improve back pain, a patient should seek advice from medical professionals. The doctor will perform a physical examination and diagnose before determining the back pain treatment, which can be as described below:

  1.  Medication. In case back pain doesn’t subside with OTC (Over-the-counter) painkillers, the prescription NSAIDs by the physician may be needed.
  2.  Rest and limit working hours in case of severe back pain.
  3.  Physical Therapy. Applying hot or cold compression depending on conditions may help relieve back pain. Electrical Stimulation and muscle release techniques are useful in back pain treatment as well.
  4. Orthotics such as back support in case of necessity. Considered by the physician or a licensed therapist.
  5.  Correcting bad posture especially when working or doing some prolonged activities.
  6. Surgery. In case of severe back pain or chronic back pain with other symptoms (such as back pain with nerve root compression), the surgery may be needed.
